THE PREZ SAYS

Hello ET Turners,

Our club lost friend and member Jim Goggans when he passed away April 25. Jim enjoyed the club and was turning some beautiful work. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family during this tough time.

Another great demo by Tom Crosby at the April meeting. Tom always comes up with some good ideas, and tops that off with unique techniques on how to accomplish the ideas.

The May meeting will bring John Leonard up front with his “Coring Technique” demonstration. I’ve seen advertising for this equipment, but never seen it in use. Looking forward to another great demo from John.

Please remember that Show & Tell for May will be our “OOPS” items. This is the pieces we messed up on, or to put it another way, maybe a new design opportunity. Go ahead and bring your successes for everyone to see, but we will only talk about the “OOPS” items if everyone will bring one.

The Setup/Clean Up crew for May10th is: Bobby Barron, Reynol Vancil, Denny Burd, Casey Welton, Louis Heflen and John Leonard.

We still need volunteers to fill service slots (see list last month newsletter). We welcome Dean Peters as a greeter, and I’ve asked him to coordinate the greeter program. If you would like to greet visitors and welcome them, please let Dean and me know so we can recognize you for volunteering. Jack Day has volunteered to help Bill Holmes with Secretary/Membership duties.

Tom Watts has volunteered to help Mike DeLong with the newsletter. Welcome aboard guys, now we need more for the rest of the positions.

Please remember the changes for June 14 demo by Alan Leland. The demo will start at 8:30 am. We will welcome any visitors, then cut straight to the demo. We will not have Show & Tell, raffle, or the quarterly raffle. Save your raffle money for July as we are going to double up on raffle items and will have the quarterly also. The first part of the demo will run until 11:30 am and we ask everyone to jump in and help with clean up as we  have to be out of the meeting room by 12:00. The last 3 hours of the demo will be held in John Leonard’s shop starting around 1:00pm. If you are planning on

Spanner Wrench Alternative Tip

I have both a spindle extension and  reducer for my lathe that incorporate a hole and two flats for a spanner wrench to ease their removal. The spanner wrench was an option that I did not purchase ($20). Instead, I took a 10” pair of “Made in China” pump pliers, found at a flea market for $5, and ground the teeth from both jaws. I can use the pliers, in conjunction with the lathe spindle lock, to grip the two flats and break loose the stuck accessories when they need to be removed. Without the sharp teeth, the accessories remain unscarred by the pliers. – Mike DeLong

Editor’s Show & Tell Favorite

As the “The Turning Times” editor I have decided to use my considerable power to begin a new feature titled “Editor’s Show & Tell Favorite”. As the title indicates, I once again used my considerable power to appoint myself as sole judge of the item selected for this prestigous distinction. Each month, after the Show & Tell portion of the meeting, I will quietly view the items presented and select one to be featured in the next newsletter. The criteria for selection is very simple – I (the all-powerful “The Turning Times” editor) must like it better than the other items. There will not be a critique or any reasoning given for the selection. ”I just liked it” is all the explanation that will be given. The item selected will bring fame to its creator by being included in the next month’s issue of “The Turning Times”. I have no doubt the possibility of gaining such a prestigous honor will cause a significant increase in show and tell items presented each month.

I quietly began this process during the April 12th meeting so the first selected item could be shown this month (see page #5). This will probably be one of those rare months when no one disagrees with my selection. Sadly, the creator of this beautiful item is no longer with us. – Editor

May 2008 Meeting

Tom Crosby threw a great demo our way in April.

And these guys were prepared to catch it!

Tom showed us several jigs, like this bandsaw jig…

…Several methods of hollowing a box, like this hook tool….

….Several special purpose tool, like this captured ring tool….

….And, as always, Tom was very entertaining 8-)
